Police Investigates Stolen Lynyrd Skynyrd Platinum Album Case
MIDDLEBURG, Fla. -- Authorities were trying to recover a Lynyrd Skynyrd platinum album that was stolen from the daughter of former frontman Ronnie Van Zant.
The family heirloom went missing Sunday or Monday from a home owned by Tammy Clary.
The platinum album signifies record sales of more than 1 million. It was in a 2 x 2-foot frame with silver edges, Clay County detectives reported. An inscription signified the award was presented to Clary.
The Southern blues-rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd was formed in Northeast Florida in the 1960s before writing hit songs like "Free Bird" and "Sweet Home Alabama."
In 2006, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Clary's daughter, Courtney Knox, told Clay County authorities someone might have gone into the house through an unlocked door and taken the album from the wall where it was displayed.
Family members estimated the item's value at $80,000, authorities said. But contacts in the record business told detectives it was worth about $1,000.
